Diary entries are broken into two parts, 1829-1830, and 1857-1963. Describes wheat production, the use of fertilizers, and family news, including the death of his wife and illness of his daughter, Harriet, and the education of son, William Poultney Adams. Also describes his experiences in the Confederate Army. There are many references to personal finances, slaves, and travel, including descriptions of a trip to Nashville and through Chicago, Niagara, Albany, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Contains inventories of Adams's property taken for taxation.
